We get a lot of questions about Instant Ink, the most common question being how it affects using compatible cartridges that are not part of Instant Ink.
Unfortunately no, you can't use compatible cartridges when signed up to Instant Ink.
HP Instant Ink is designed to lock you into using HP’s original ink cartridges. The program works by linking your printer to HP’s subscription service, which tracks your ink usage and automatically sends replacement cartridges when needed.
If you try to replace a HP Instant Ink cartridge with a standard HP cartridge or a lower-cost compatible, your printer will reject it. This means you’re tied to HP’s ink and pricing for as long as you’re part of the subscription.
Want More Flexibility?
If you prefer the freedom to choose your ink—whether that’s original HP cartridges or high-quality, cost-effective compatibles—then HP Instant Ink may not be the best option for you. Many customers find they can save money and avoid restrictions by purchasing ink separately rather than committing to the subscription model.
