We know how annoying it is when you’re ready to print, and your printer insists there’s ‘No Ink’—especially when you know there is! Before you panic, try these simple fixes to get your printer back up and running.
1. Double check if the cartridge is actually empty
It might sound obvious, but sometimes the simplest answer is the right one! If you’ve been using the cartridge for a while, it’s worth checking if it’s genuinely empty before trying anything else.
2. Clean the cartridge chip
Your printer communicates with the cartridge using a small copper chip. If dust or residue is blocking the connection, your printer might not detect the ink.
• Remove the cartridge.
• Find the gold/copper contacts on the cartridge.
• Gently clean them with a dry cloth or a pencil eraser.
• Reinstall the cartridge and see if the error disappears.
3. Restart your printer
Sometimes, your printer just needs a quick refresh.
• Turn it off at the plug.
• Wait 20 seconds.
• Turn it back on.
This resets the printer’s memory and can often fix the issue.
Special Cases
If you're using refilled/remanufactured cartridges
Refilled or remanufactured cartridges often use chips that don’t always reset properly. If your printer thinks the cartridge is empty even though there’s still ink, keep printing until you see faded pages—that’s when you know it’s time for a replacement.
Got a Canon printer?
Canon printers can be a little stubborn with remanufactured cartridges. If you see an error message, try this:
• Hold the Stop/Reset button (red circle with a triangle) for about 5 seconds.
• This should bypass the warning and let you continue printing.
