Just printed your new super-awesome photo only to find it has a big white border? This is caused by your printer margins, and the only way to print up to the edge of your page is a feature called ‘borderless printing’.
Unfortunately, not all printers have borderless printing so there's no guarantee you'll be able to do it.
How do I check if my printer has borderless printing?
The easiest way is to Google your printer model and find it on the manufacturers website. Check the spec or feature list for borderless printing.
Otherwise go into your printer settings (accessible when you go to print) and select ‘Preferences’ or ‘Advanced options’. Somewhere in these options you’ll hopefully find the option to allow borderless printing.
What if my printer does not have borderless printing?
If you can’t find how to remove borders from your prints then it is likely your printer does not support it, leaving you with two options.
1. Print onto larger paper and cut it down
Print your 6×4 image onto A4 paper, then cut it out. It’s more expensive than using 6×4 photo paper, but you can get more than one image on a page and it’s easy enough to do.
2. Buy a new printer
Extreme? Yes. Justifiable? Possibly.
If photo printing is important and you love messing around with your snaps, prints with borders will never satisfy you. Just make sure to check the new one has borderless printing!
Top tip: Steady hands or a guillotine will help :)
